Cedar side by side fence installed by New Generation Construction

This design of fencing is very common amongst homeowners who want a solid wall of privacy.

Pros:

  • Lower cost than other fence styles
  • Fairly simple to install
  • Provides full privacy
  • Can be done horizontally or vertically

Cons:

  • Not as visually interesting as some styles
  • One side will show the exposed rail and posts

A shadow box or “good neighbor” style fence is the perfect choice when you want both sides of your fence to be the “good” side.

Pros:

  • There is no “less attractive” side
  • Visually interesting

Cons:

  • Gaps between boards may allow pedestrians or neighbors to see into your property at certain angles.
  • Requires more materials, so costs a bit more.

If you want to define the boundary of your property, but don’t need to worry about privacy, a picket fence is always a great option.

Pros:

  • Lower cost than most fence types
  • Many opportunities to customize (height, picket shape, gap between pickets, etc.)

Cons:

  • Does not provide privacy
  • Space between pickets may allow for critters or children to escape.

Choosing a split rail fence for your yard is an excellent choice if you want a rustic, low-maintenance option.

Pros:

  • Requires little maintenance, if any
  • Available in 2 and 3-rail options with multiple lengths and widths

Cons:

  • Physically demanding installation
  • Provides no privacy
  • Not suitable for creating a secure boundary (except for large animals like livestock)

Hog wire fencing with framed panels are ideal for areas such as pastures and gardens where visibility and security are important.

Pros:

  • Multiple options available, including black coating, varying heights, and widths.
  • Creates a cleaner, more modern look than traditional utility fencing.

Cons:

  • Not a good option for privacy
  • Smaller critters may be able to enter through the spaces in the wire
